Celebrating Our Third Dia-Birthday

Carb DM is thrilled to be celebrating its third dia-birthday! From a group of 14 parents who gathered for coffee, through registering as a nonprofit, to today—Carb DM is a vibrant community of 1,200 members who come together to do three things: Connect. Learn. Thrive.

We all know how difficult living with diabetes is, but we also appreciate how much easier it becomes when you have company. That’s why on the occasion of our third dia-birthday we are celebrating the great company we keep: People with diabetes young and old, newly diagnosed or 50-year veterans, parents and other caregivers, siblings, friends, and relatives, doctors, mental health professionals, school nurses, educators, and coaches. We are all in this together.

And together, we have accomplished so much already:

  1. Provided support to over 500 families and individuals through our ongoing programs such as Coffee & Carbs, Carbs in the Park, Little Carbs, and Beer & Basals.
  2. Increased the knowledge and broadened the horizon of over 700 people through our Type 1 Topic speaker series and the first ever Bay Area Diabetes Summit with a total of over 100 incredible speakers from the Bay Area and beyond.
  3. Improved and strengthened the relationship of 80 mothers and daughters through our Mother-Daughter-Weekends.

We also launched some unique programs for the Latino and Asian communities.

The feedback we continue to receive is heartwarming. Heike Fischer, Alex’s mother (11, dxd 2007) and Carb DM board member says:

“Carb DM has helped our family in so many ways to Connect. Learn. Thrive. Whether we are enjoying old friends and meeting new ones at  Carbs in the Park; learning something new at a Type 1 Topics talk; or our 11-year old son is getting his picture taken with a Super Bowl champion with T1D on World Diabetes Day. Carb DM keeps filling our bucket! Through our visits to the Little Carbs gatherings my son has realized he is a leader and inspiration to others, too. We cannot imagine our life with T1D without the Carb DM community!”

PhotoGrid_1398208070289Our goal is to bring these life-changing experiences to more people in our community so that they too can benefit from improved health and increased quality of life. Our plans for the coming year include:

  1. Offer a day-long program for teens and young adults transitioning to college.
  2. Launch new, half-day workshops in Morgan Hill, Santa Cruz, and Salinas.
  3. Expand our Grupo CARBS program for the Latino community to Salinas and the East Bay.

We know that this year is going to be bigger and better than ever. Being part of a community like Carb DM helps everyone on the diabetes team. As Dr. Saleh Adi, Pediatric Endocrinologist and Director, Madison Clinic for Pediatric Diabetes at UCSF states:

“Carb DM has become the go to place where patients and families can meet with each other or with health care providers in small, casual, and geographically convenient gatherings, away from the formal and busy clinic settings.  These gatherings serve to expose the expertise of various health care providers from across the Bay Area to a wider range of individuals touched by diabetes. Tremendously unique and effective.  Well done!”

We hope you will show your strong support for Carb DM and celebrate our accomplishments by making a gift to ensure that we can continue on this path of changing lives for the better. Here are some ways you can help:

  1. Make a Sustaining Gift to Carb DM. Whether you can spare $5, $10 or $30 a month, your ongoing gift will provide reliable ongoing support for our programs. (And you get a gift, too!)
  2. Make a one-time gift of $33, $333 or $3,333 to Carb DM. Your gift in any amount will help us reach our goal to raise a $30,000 Dia-Birthday Fund!
  3. Share this with 3 of your friends. Tell them how much Carb DM means to you and invite them to join you in supporting Carb DM!
