About the Program

Every parent has a dream for their child.  Dr. Ed Damiano’s dream for his son, David, is one that we can relate to — that he will someday live a life unencumbered by type 1 diabetes.

Edward Damiano is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Boston University.  His expertise and training are in the areas of mechanical and biomedical engineering, applied mechanics, and applied mathematics. Ever since his son was diagnosed with T1D at 11 months of age, he has been committed to creating and integrating closed-loop control technologies with a vision of building a bionic pancreas by the time David headed off to college in the Fall of last year.

In October 2015, Ed and team — with the help of seed money from Eli Lilly — founded the company Beta Bionics using a special legal structure called a Public Benefit Corporation.  At Beta Bionics, Inc., they are developing a bionic pancreas called the iLet™ – a revolutionary and fully integrated wearable medical device that automatically and autonomously manages blood sugars 24/7.

We’re so excited to hear Ed and to learn more about the iLet and the clinical trials starting this June right here in the Bay Area! Don’t miss this talk.
