Author Luncheon 2019: a Conversation with Rep. Jackie Speiers

Earlier this month, Carb DM supporters and their friends gathered at the Women’s Club of Palo Alto for Carb DM’s Annual Author Luncheon. This year’s guest was Congresswoman Jackie Speier, U.S. Representative for California’s 14th congressional district since 2008.

Speier began her political career as  a congressional staffer for Congressman Leo Ryan. In 1978, she joined Ryan as part of a fact-finding mission to Jonestown, Guyana, investigating allegations of human-rights abuses by Jim Jones and his People. Ryan and four others were killed in an ambush, while Speiers was shot five times. At the Author Luncheon, Speiers spoke about the Jonestown incident, reading an excerpt from her book, “Undaunted: Surviving Jonestown, Summoning Courage, and Fighting Back”. Her passion for advocacy and fighting spirit was evident as she spoke of women and female representation in Congress, and why she went into public service. She shared details of her children and memories of her first husband, who passed away in a car accident in 1994.

One of the highlights of the event was Congresswoman Speier working the crowd, soliciting donations for Carb DM. She adopted the role of auctioneer, encouraging donation “bids”, earning a few delighted laughs as well as donation pledges as high as $4000! Afterwards, Congresswoman Speier lingered to chat with audience members and sign copies of her book.

The event was a huge success, raising a total of $22,000, $7,000 over the event’s stated goal. The room was full and everyone had a good time. Many thanks to Congresswoman Speier for lending us your time and sharing your valuable insights. You are such an inspiration! Additional thanks go to moderator Laura Zimmerman, former newscaster at KTVU Channel 2, who did a wonderful job of leading the conversation and keeping the event flowing smoothly. Finally, thanks to everyone who came out to attend the event and support Carb DM!
