    Diabetes 101: a Gathering for Newly Diagnosed Families

    Please join us on Thursday, May 15 from 9-11 am at the Jordan Family residence to socialize, ask questions and learn about type 1 diabetes (T1D) medical and support resources in your local community.

    Life with T1D can be challenging, but you are not alone! The greater Bay Area has a robust T1D community full of individuals, medical professionals and organizations all with diverse missions to help improve the lives of families affected by T1D.

    Speakers include Dr. Avni Shah, MD and Associate Professor in the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at Stanford, Karen Jordan, JDRF Greater Bay Area VP of Research, CarbDM Board President and mother of a daughter with T1D, Simone Price, Development Manager of Outreach at JDRF Greater Bay Area, and Tamar Sofer-Geri, Founder, Executive Director of Carb DM and mother of a daughter with T1D.

  • Carbs in the Park, a gathering for families living with T1D. Back by popular demand, Carb DM is going boating again. This Carbs in the Park is in partnership with ABCD. A nonprofit organization, their mission is to distribute supplies to children who need them and to provide funding for children to go to camp. Bring your extra supplies.

  • Type 1 Topics, a speaker series covering a variety of topics relevant to the type 1 community. 
    • Cyrus Khambatta, PhD: Blood Sugar and Athletic Recovery. Cyrus Khambatta, an adult with T1D, is the founder of Mangoman Nutrition and Fitness. He received a PhD in Nutritional Biochemistry from UC Berkeley, and has studied the biology of pancreatic beta cell failure for over a decade. He will talk about the challenges of controlling blood sugar and exercising.

    • Q&A with Dr. Saleh Adi, Pediatric Endocrinologist, Director, Madison Clinic for Pediatric Diabetes, UCSF.
      Join Dr. Adi for a town hall style meeting where you get to ask the question that are on your mind! Wondering why your child goes to bed with in- range numbers and wakes up high? To bolus or not to bolus for adrenaline induced highs? When and how do I use temporary basal rate? What do I do when I have to disconnect from the pump for more than an hour? Bring any and every T1D related question and let Dr. Adi answer them for you!
